Animation for Lucy

Below you will find a link to a short animated movie that I made for Lucy. Please don’t worry, I do not plan to quit my day job…

Note: There is no audio for this movie. You must turn closed captions on to view this video. Click on the CC button in the lower right hand corner of the YouTube video player to enable closed captions.

Closed caption button. When the background is red, captions are enabled. The button is visible only after starting the movie.

The animation was created by taking pictures with a webcam hanging over my desk once every second while drawing. After capturing the series of raw images, unnecessary images were discarded. For example the part where I draw the cartoon runner was shortened by removing every other image from the sequence of raw images. The result is what appears to be my ability to draw very rapidly. All of the images are stitched together into an AVI file which plays on your browsers movie player. Closed captions are created by including a text file that contains all of the words for the captions.

In future animations I hope to establish a more logical story and progression of drawings. Crafting words and drawings together (that make sense) was more challenging than I anticipated. This animation is essentially the result of ‘winging it’.

The technical details of the animation process can be found in an accompanying post. The motivation for the animation came from the RSAnimate lectures animated by Cognitive Media in the U.K.
